This article reconstructs the daily life of Jesuit missionaries inChinaduring the late Ming dynasty. The evidence comes from a manuscript Baike xunshi (Instruction pour les visites de Mandarins), which contains dialogues between Jesuit priests and their Chinese servants and friends. In the work one can see how the Jesuits introduce European customs to the Chinese and learn alien customs inChina. The various interactions between Jesuits, Chinese servants, Chinese Catholics, and the Chinese scholar-gentleman show how the Jesuits dealt artfully with the differences betweenChinaandEuropeand combined various cultural elements in daily life.
