Confucius Translated, and Filial Piety in Transwriting:Early Missionaries’ Translations of the Xiaojing

This paper traces the history of the western missionaries’ contribution to sinology via synchronic and diachronic investigations of their translations of Confucian texts, especially the Book of Filial Piety (Xiaojing). Here the author is attempting to redefine “Western sinology” as an intercultural discipline and the horizon of an ongoing dialogue. This means that Chinese historians of sinology need to go beyond the simplified duality of East and West and study Western sinology in greater depth. This would entail, among other things, the need for greater scholarly attention to the connection between the early Jesuits and the Protestant missionaries in late imperialChina.

Xu Guangqi and Intercultural Dialogue.

Xu Guangqi is usually regarded as a converted Confucian scientist who was deeply involved in transmitting European science to late Ming China to save the empire from decline. After having revisited his writings within the context of his life-experience, this article highlights the indispensable relation between the spiritual and material dimensions of the reality indicated in Xu’s thought. In his view, it is equally important to improve both human material and spiritual life. The two are of the same value as vulgar utensils benefit the human body and subtle morality liberates the human soul. The significance of his assertion “Complementing Confucianism and replacing Buddhism” (buru yifo 補儒易佛) in Chinese intellectual history is not only to import European scientific knowledge but to establish a metaphysical foundation for human life on earth by means of the Sino-European intercultural dialogue.
